Wyoming Area's Guide for Anti-Bullying

The district has formed a School Climate Committee that consists of the Administration and Guidance departments. We have recently conducted a School Climate Survey with our students grades 4-12. The results of the survey highlighted many positive aspects of the climate at Wyoming Area, indicating our students generally feel safe in our school. Some areas of improvement based on the results are that students report "some students are regularly picked on, called names, or teased by other students".

Although Wyoming Area has been taking action to address the issue of bullying in the form of discipline referrals, conflict resolution and the institution of the School Wide Positive Behavior Support Program, we feel that we need to do more. First, we feel that a clear definition of bullying needs to be established and is as follows:

Definitions of bullying taken from The Olweus Bulling Prevention Group, 2004:

Bullying - "A student is being bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more students. Bullying involves an imbalance in power or strength. The student who is bullied has difficulty defending himself/herself."

Cyber Bullying - "Bullying through email, instant messaging, chat room exchanges, Web site posts, or digital messages or images sent to cellular phones or personal digital assistant. Cyber bullying, like traditional bullying, involves an imbalance of power, aggression, and a negative action that is often repeated."

Providing and maintaining a safe school environment requires involvement from the community, teachers, staff, administrators and parents to ensure our students continue to feel safe at Wyoming Area.

On this page you will find PA Bullying Prevention Toolkit, along with other informational material regarding safe schools and bullying. In addition, there are bullying reporting forms and an email address where bullying can be reported. The district is currently implementing district wide anti- bullying and teaching of prosocial behaviors into our curriculum.
